Mt Difficulty

Central Otago, New Zealand

Mt Difficulty was established in 1992, over a handshake between the owners of five newly-planted Bannockburn vineyards. From this gentleman’s agreement the label that was later to become Mt Difficulty Wines is lucky enough to have some of Central Otago’s oldest and most revered vineyards. Situated along Felton Road shadowed by the tis namesake Mount Difficulty this unique area of extremes is ideally suited to crafting wines that speak with a sense of place. “Our philosophy combines ethical viticulture with minimal intervention allowing the wine to express its personality and reflect its home. These wines are spearheaded by several world renowned famous Pinot Noir experiences. Mt D’s Pinot Noir was an inaugural grape alongside Chardonnay to the wear the companies first vintage in 1998. It was this first vintage a year later that Mt Difficulty started on its award winning ways taking gold at Air New Zealand Wine Awards. It was the talented Grant Taylor that crafted this first vintage who then handed the winemaking rains over to Matt Dicey who has been in control ever since. Now with help of assistant winemaker Roger deGrauw Mt Difficulty is known worldwide as the quintessential Central Otago experience. The winery makes several flavours under two labels. The newly styled Roaring Meg varietals that are sourced from the entire region, and the Bannockburn based Mt Difficulty brand that also includes Single Vineyard and Growers series versions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Chenin Blanc Pinot Gris Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Winemaker: Matt Dicey Matt (aka Le Grand Fromage) has a lifelong association with the wine industry, and is a fourth generation vigneron. After achieving a Masters Degree in Oenology and Viticulture Matt spent four years gaining experience overseas. He returned to Bannockburn in 1998 to try his hand at the ultimate winemaking challenge – making the best wines possible in a region with infinite potential. Matt's winter passion is skiing with his family, while summers bring jet boating and mountain biking "adventures".”
